It was in 1990 that Asahikawa City began The International Furniture
Design Competition (IFDA). In the same year the Berlin Wall collapsed, marking
the beginning of yet another period of drastic reform in world history. Japan's
furniture market was situated worldwide, from the advanced regions of USA and
Europe, to developing regions throughout Asia. During these formative years, however,
our focus was simply on economical efficiency, and made light of the importance
of healthy living and sustainability of the natural environment.
Asahikawa city, located on the northernmost island in Japan, represents the finest
the country has to offer in the wood and furniture industry. Every three years,
the city holds the IFDA as an opportunity to manufacture products for the world
market on the tradition which was forged during its 100-year history, and is proud
to announce it will be holding its 6th event in 2005.
Although we have much work ahead of us, our wish is to contribute to the world
furniture industry and the progress of our lifestyle by vigorously pursuing harmony
between preservation of our natural environment and healthy, intellectual living.
Having enjoyed successful commercialization of many great ideas and presentations
from events past, we look forward to continue this competition, and with the cooperation
of all talented participants from around the world, our goal is to carry on our
vision of sustainable development in the world's furniture industry.
I hope this competition will serve as a valuable bridge between the designers
of the world and our furniture makers as we look ahead to a healthy future on
Earth.
Best regards,
Minoru Nagahara
